There’s a huge trend right now in the health food industry — to incorporate supplements into your food. I like this. I would much rather eat food than choke back 5-10 different pills.
So, why not kick up your recipe a knotch by adding a whole food based protein supplement to your favourite treats! I created these little balls of bliss on Sunday afternoon when I was playing around in my kitchen.
Now I must emphasize that supplements do NOT replace nutritious “whole” foods. That’s why I chose this vegan protein powder because it’s contains a comprehensive formula of the richest source of vegetarian proteins including non-GMO pea, cranberry, brown rice, alfalfa and hemp.
You could have 2 of these for a nutritious, fat-burning snack or dessert. The protein and fibre will keep you fuller longer and cravings away!
Ingredients:
- 8 medjol dates (remove seeds and soak in water for a couple of hours)
- 1 cup walnuts
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 cup flavoured protein powder. I used Genuine Health strawberry flavoured vegan protein powder
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup coconut flakes (unsulfured)
Method: Place all the ingredients (excluding the coconut flakes) into your food processor and blend until smooth – about 1-2 minutes. Form into 1.5 balls and roll in flaked coconut. Place in freezer for a couple of hours or until you are ready to enjoy to let them harden a bit.
Makes 10-12 balls.

Yummy I bet they really were bliss they sound delicious!
I will definitely be trying these! I have never tried strawberry flavoured protein before so I’m looking forward to the change. Experiments in the kitchen are always fun…when they turn out!
let me know how they turn out!
Hi Joy!
Just wondering if you could substitute hemp hearts or ground flaxseed for the chia seed? Is one better than the other? Thanks!
Leigha
You can definitely sub in flaxseed for the chia instead. I prefer chia for this recipe because it’s higher in fibre, but flax would be fine too. Hemp could also be added, but I think you’ve got enough protein and good fats already that the chia or flax are a better choice.
I cannot find the genuine health strawberry protein powder. Can you tell me where I might find it?
I made a different version of these and used the chocolate flavoured protein powder instead and 1 tsp of pure maple syrup instead of vanilla extract and they tasted like a turtles chocolate. Amazing!
sounds like chocolate heaven!
