I was doing a smoothie demo at Lululemon in Toronto yesterday and if you tried it in person and want the recipe, here it is!
- Vegan-style protein powder (NO soy!) Brand: Progressive
- Almond milk (My own homemade recipe while it lasts, oooooooh ya, you don’t know how good homemade tastes until you try it – you will never go back!!)
- Organic vanilla
- Organic bananas
- Organic raspberries
- Sprinkled with (non-irradiated) cinnamon for some blood sugar balance, if ya like!
I did not include measurements because I want you to experiment and find out what you like best. I personally never use more than an entire scoop of protein powder in my smoothies (too dense) and besides, you can overdo protein too! As well, I occasionally add water to thin out the smoothie a bit, I like it to be “drinkable”.
Be joyous,

Just wanted to tell ya Joy that I found your website about a month or so ago and haven’t looked back since. Your advice about eating real food, your recipes for making real food taste good, and all of your incredible information about the health benefits of eating this way, it’s been exactly what I needed to make lasting changes in my life. Now my husband is starting to pick up these tidbits as well, and we’re enjoying being in the kitchen together, whipping up new healthy inventions! Thanks for continuing to provide such excellent information!
Wonderful, your comment made my day. This is why I love doing what I do so much. Thank you!
This sounds yummy and I love the fact it’s brain food. Thanks so much for all your recipes Joy. Your blog is awesome.
This is exactly what I need. Thanks Joy.
One more thing, do you have any other smoothie recipes? I love eating them for breakfast.
Hi Joy, My daughter who is 10 doesn’t eat any meat or fish and she is also a very picky eater.
She eats plenty of Veggies and Fruit but I find that she really lacks Protein as she doesn’t like beans or many sources of protein.
Would a Protein powder OK for a child?
Yes definitely protein powder is fine. The “progressive” brand makes an excellent vegan formula that I recommend to my clients. You can buy it at any health food store for relatively inexpensive. I suggest you use only half a scoop of powder.
Also, have you tried her on quinoa (“keen-wah”). It’s a complete vegetarian protein. Here are some delicious recipes:

As well, veggies and fruit won’t give her complete proteins which is extremely important for growth, development and brain health. Have a read of this article on how to complete your proteins: http://www.thatsfit.ca/2010/05/06/a-vegetarian-diet-gets-a-healthy-makeover/
thanks Joy!!
I have the kids on Progressive Vitamins as well as myself, so I know the brand well.
thanks for the tip on quinoa, i wasn’t aware that it was a complete vegetarian protein.
My pleasure Claudia. It sounds like you know what you are doing which is fantastic! Those really great vitamins. Yes, quinoa is like the gold of the vegetarian kingdom for protein and it’s so versatile. Have a wonderful day!
Great recipe. Just one question – where I live I can’t always find a lot of organic fruits. Would regular bananas be ok to use if I don’t have any organic ones?
Yes that’s okay Dorothy. Bananas have a thick skin, so you are okay to buy them non-organic.
I’m all about vegan (same with the protein bar brand I am endorsing), thank you very much for this recipe.
Yeah, it’s good, very useful, thanks
